M&A overviews and league tables

Bloomberg
Bloomberg gives league tables of M&A type MA and press [GO]. See tab 4 for league tables, and limit to M&A. Or go to Advanced Search on the red bar to run a screening.
Available from PCs in the Finance Suite
S&P Capital IQ Pro
Go to More > Transactions & Private Markets > Transactions League tables Use the filters to alter date, merger type etc. The following industries are eligible for League Tables on the S&P Capital IQ Pro platform: Financial Institutions (FIG), Real Estate, Energy, Technology, Media & Telecommunications, and Metals & Mining. Transaction industry is defined based on the business line in which the deal target operates.
FactSet
Go to Idea screening > Transactions. Scroll down the filters on the left. you will find: Advisors > M&A advisors. You must pre-register to access the FactSet database.
SDC Platinum. Now accessible via WRDS.
Huge database, primarily used for its deal screening and downloading capabilities, but can be used to produce league tables too.
MarketLine Advantage
For deals data go to the Database tab > Deals. Gives an overview back 5 years and offers additional filters to further refine your search.
Eikon for students
Just enter: League in the top search box to get to a Deals Market Overview for up to one year showing a ranking financial advisors. You can alter region and league table type.

Screening for deals

The following databases all offer the ability to screen for deals based on a range of criteria. NB: some may have download limits that mean your search will have to be broken down into smaller chunks in order to export (and in some cases view) the data.

Bloomberg
Type: MA and press [GO] enter: region, industry, deal size and deal type. You can also screen for M&A deals with PE or VC involvement.
Only available on campus on the Finance Suite Pcs.
S&P Capital IQ Pro
Go the Screening tab > Transactions page.
Select general details about the transaction; company, industry, geography, date, financials, etc.
You can also select M&A specific details like target security types, consideration offered, deal conditions and deal attitude. Has limits on the numbers of deals you can view / download in one go.
Eikon for students
To filter for deals use the screener app set to deals universe and asset class M&A. It only shows a few basic filters you must search for more such as "Target Nation". It will not display results over 15,000. You can add columns to the results before you download.
FactSet
FactSet contains the MergerStat database. Choose F icon>Company>M&A and then select MergerStat. Can screen on a huge range of criteria. Alternatively you can use the Merger Metrics option to search for highly negotiated elements of merger agreements.
You must pre-register to use FactSet.
SDC Platinum
The largest database of M&A deals, IPOs and Venture Capital deals that we have access to.
Large number of screening and exporting dataytypes. Now only accessible via WRDS

Data on dead or defunct companies

The following databases contain data on companies that have merged, or been acquired in such a way as they no longer trade under the original name.

Datastream (available with Eikon)
Datastream company accounts data on Advance and AFO goes back to 1980. DS also retains share price data up to point where shares ceased to be traded.
To get price data on dead companies. Open Excel and select Datastream add-in.
Select: Time Series Data
Select: Find Series.
In the navigator search box type in the name of the dead equity you are looking for.
Select the correct entity by clicking on the symbol
For adjusted price data leave the datatype field blank.
Set your data range and run the search.

Datastream is available in the Finance Suite on the Eikon PCs in SO.W2.02. Alternatively Eikon IDs can be booked for remote use. See the A-Z list for more information, but please note that using Datastream remotely requires an install that is only currently available for Windows users.
FAME
From the default "grouped view", select Status then Active/Inactive from the menu. Then select Inactive companies. Can then further screen by criteria.
Orbis Europe
Formerly known as Amadeus.
From the default "grouped view", select Status then Active/Inactive from the menu. Then select Inactive companies. Can then screen by further criteria.

Ownership structure

Bloomberg
Enter Company ticker and the command RELS
click Option for major subsidiaries
Available in the library only on the T2 Finance Zone pc's
S&P Capital IQ Pro
Enter company name in search box to select the equity required
select Investments and then direct investments on the left hand menu for a list of subsidiaries.
Eikon for students
Find your company. Go to overview and Company Tree Structure
FAME
From the default "grouped view", Use the search box (top left hand of screen) to search by company name. From the Standard report on the company, select Ownership>Current subsidiaries to get a full list.
