Book - if a core component of a course

Book - as a core component of a course

If a book is a core component of a course get in touch with the Library so we can investigate options. We can commission an e-book (Koretext or Bibliu etc ) for the participants on a specific course but you must:

  • Allow at least 3 weeks for us to liaise  with the suppliers. Text books can be problematic.
  • Be sure in advance that there is budget available, we need the programme director's go-ahead.

There may already be a Library e-book, but the access models vary according to the supplier. They may use a credit system or limit the number of concurrent users. Check in advance with the Library.

See our guide to e-books

Supplying limited book content

Supplying limited book content

We pay for a CLA licence to supply content from titles included in the CLA’s Higher Education repertoire. We can copy:

  • One chapter or 10% whichever is greater.
  • Of a book owned by the School.
  • We must add a copyright cover sheet to each reading and report use annually.

If you need a greater quantity, you must pay – or use an e-book. The Library can investigate the most cost effective option.
You may not use different editions of a book to circumvent the rules or use a range of different sources to pick and mix content and thus replace the need for students or the Library to buy textbooks. See the textbook substitution guidance from the CLA.

Books - how to supply book content in Canvas
The CLA has a Document Content Store (DCS) where we are now uploading chapters, as OCR scans wherever possible (for accessibility). We then supply links to the stored reading for use in Canvas (Links only works for current students.) We can also add chapters which we have purchased the rights to copy.

The advantage of this system

  • The DCS supplies usage data – so we can see if chapters are being read and/or downloaded and by how many students
  • The students can use the Kortext tools to search text, highlight and export extracts as well as printing and downloading readings.
  • We don’t have to attach a completed copyright cover sheet to each PDF as these are autogenerated.
  • We don’t need to record the full details for the annual CLA return as the DCS records the data automatically.

Accessibility
OCR scans can be read by assistive technology software as can most web pages. If you have an old scan ask the Library for help.
